Get The Edge

"Getting the edge requires two things. First, you must out prepare your opponent both mentally & physically. Second, you must always give great effort. Effort is talent." - Stephen Boyd

Our 2021 "Game Speed" program concentrates on improving all components of athleticism including flexibility, balance, coordination, relative strength, speed, power, endurance, durability, and self-confidence. Workouts will be conducted in Massapequa at John J. Burns Park and Field of Dreams. They will be held three times a week: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 7:30pm - 8:45pm. The program runs from June 28th – August 19th, 2021. You can choose from the following three programs: 8 weeks (24 sessions), 6 weeks (or any 18 sessions) and/or 4 weeks (or any 12 sessions).

The most important physical quality in athletics is speed. Just as an athlete learns to kick, throw, catch and shoot they must learn the proper techniques of linear and multidirectional speed. This improves performance and more importantly enhances injury resilience. Every workout is designed to follow a specific sequence optimizing performance while avoiding over training. The main objective is to improve movement efficiency using the tools and philosophy we apply. Workouts becomes progressively more challenging after fundamental movements and basic techniques have been mastered.

The Coach

As a 3 time pro-bowl linebacker for the Detroit Lions, I had the awesome opportunity to play, train and learn from great athletes, coaches and trainers. One of them, the legendary Chris Spielman, told me in my rookie year, "In the NFL you need to out prepare the competition and “get the edge.” Either you get it or you give it to your opponent.” - Chris Spielman 1995

I never forgot those words and that is the inspiration that led me to create the Stephen Boyd Get the Edge Strength & Conditioning Program. An athletic enhancement program for male high school athletes ages 14 - 18 devoted to teaching young men how to prepare mentally and physically for their upcoming athletic season. I am so proud to offer my summer camp for the 8th consecutive year and look forward to helping you "Get the Edge".

Our Philosophy

Our mission is to teach young men how to prepare both mentally and physically for their upcoming athletic season. We provide a safe, challenging training environment that helps athletes maximize their physical potential while minimizing athletic-related injuries. As coaches we believe it is our duty to be positive role models for our athletes. We will teach, motivate and hold students accountable to our training principles.

Today's young athletes and parents must understand that you do not beat your opponent by playing more; you beat your opponent by out preparing and training smarter. Every athlete must first build a solid foundation of relative body strength and fundamental movement skills. In working with athletes ranging from middle school to the professional level, it is evident that the athletes who possess these two characteristics, prior to mastering sport specific skills, are less injury prone and more successful.

Our program concentrates on enhancing the physical and mental qualities every athlete needs. This includes mobility, posture, coordination, strength, speed, power, endurance, mental toughness, self-confidence and leadership. By doing so we enhance injury resilience and instill a motivated mind set that will give each athlete "the edge" during and after their athletic careers.
